Oakland Soul suffered its second loss of the season to Stockton Cargo in a 2-1 defeat at the Coliseum. Cargo no sweeps the season series between the two sides, putting Soul’s record to 2-2-2.
Soul got into dangerous areas throughout the match, but just couldn’t find the finishing touch. Stockton, meanwhile, made the most of its looks. Cargo’s first goal in the 28th minute on the end of a corner, where a long pass from the right side went all the way across the face of the net to find a teammate for a leaping header.
Oakland got one back in the second half in the 54th minute when Miranda Nild controlled the ball down the right side before centering a pass to Audrey Lam in front of the net. Lam laid off a nifty pass on her first touch to Sam Tran, who rolled a shot to the far post for the goal.
But Soul’s joy was short-lived. Just three minutes later, Stockton scored the game-winning goal after a bad giveaway was committed in front of Oakland’s own goal, leading to an easy score for Cargo.

- Good looks on goal, but couldn’t convert
Oakland had its look at Stockton’s net, but just couldn’t convert its opportunities. It had a similar tone to Soul’s 0-0 tie with Pleasanton RAGE.
Henar Urteaga sent a shot wide in the fifth minute, while Tatiana Cunningham had a long shot on target three minutes later. Shea Murison was played into the box in the 28th, but couldn’t pull the trigger on a shot.
Soul’s best chance in the first half was in the 38th minute when Sydney Middaugh when Lam played a low ball through to her charging toward Cargo’s penalty area. However, Middaugh’s shot sailed over the net.
In the second half, Emilia Eriksen lofted in a long shot from outside the box that was pushed out for a corner in the 59th minute. Cunningham then had a shot sail high in the 64th, then Oakland’s only shot on target in the second half came two minutes later.

At 2-2-2, today’s results will likely end Soul’s playoff chances in the jam-packed nine-team NorCal Division. Stockton’s win keeps them undefeated, but they are still in second-place with 14 points behind San Juan FC at 5-1-0.
This year, the Soul cannot bank on an extra playoff spot for the division with just one allotted to the entire division.
