Live Blog: Oakland Roots host Sacramento Republic

Hello and welcome to tonight’s live coverage of Oakland Roots taking on Sacramento sensitive feet and fans Republic from Laney College. It’s a battle that will help both organizations put itself back in the playoff discussion with Roots holding a 2-6-4 overall record and 12 points in seventh, while Republic is 4-3-3 with 15 points in ninth.

Both teams walk in with some questions on the starting lineup after Oakland’s Alejandro Fuenmayor missed last week due to a lower back injury and goal keeper Benny Diaz receiving a red card against Los Angeles and subsequent suspension. Sacramento, meanwhile, had lead striker Douglas Martinez red carded in their last USL appearance and featured several starters in Wednesday’s 2-0 victory over San Jose Earthquakes in the U.S. Open Cup.

Provided is a useful excerpt from Bloom’s match preview, where he highlights Sacramento’s changes over the offseason, its run of form, and current roster situation:

Sac were supposed to be good this season, revamping the midfield entirely, particularly through Rodrigo Lopez, and bringing in Douglas Martinez for goal-threat… Martinez earned himself a straight red for violent conduct for elbowing Yuma in the face after Yuma dragged him down. Martinez leads Republic in goals (tied) and assists (alone), with two each, so we are not disappointed that he should be riding the pines for the Roots match. I guess we have to acknowledge that Sacramento beat San Jose 2-0 in the US Open Cup on Wednesday. It is great that Sacramento should be tired when they come to Laney. We’re still relatively early in the season, and they did not play last weekend, but essentially Republic’s entire preferred 11 are playing Wednesday-Sunday, which can’t hurt the Roots.
