Oakland Roots re-sign Johnny Rodriguez

Update:

Oakland Roots have announced that they’ve re-signed Johnny Rodriguez to an extension.

The blog has learned that the Oakland Roots are set to re-sign Johnny Rodriguez to an extension. Rodriguez comes back for his fourth season in a Roots’ uniform, making him the longest tenured player on the team behind goal keeper Taylor Bailey.

We’re told Rodriguez will sign a “multi-year” deal to remain in Oakland. A club announcement is considered imminent.

He was the team’s Goal of the Year winner in 2022 for his incredible lob against Hartford. Rodriguez is currently the only center forward on the roster.

Rodriguez, 24, originally signed on with Roots back in September 2020 ahead of the NISA Fall Tournament out of CSU Northridge. He’s made over 50 appearances with the club when counting his NISA and USL Championship postseason appearances.

In his two years in the USL Championship, Rodriguez has scored four goals and recorded three assists in 1,193 total minutes.

Roots are about halfway through their applicable roster slots, marking the 12th player officially signed following the transfer of Charlie Dennis. The full list includes:

  1. Johnny Rodriguez
  2. Dariusz Formella
  3. Lindo Mfeka
  4. Danny Barbir
  5. Wolfgang Prentice
  6. Paul Blanchette
  7. Memo Diaz
  8. Taylor Bailey
  9. Edgardo Rito
  10. Ryan Her
  11. Napo Matsoso
  12. Trayvone Reid
