It appears that Oakland Roots could be set to make its first outside addition to their back line with former San Jose Earthquakes Academy prospect, defender Drew Murray, who is just 17-years old.

The news was first spotted by USMNTProspects, noticing that Murray added Oakland Roots to his Instagram bio. It’s currently unclear if an official announcement from Oakland is imminent, but its a situation to keep an eye on.

The blog was clued to a couple of Earthquakes Academy players who the organization was keeping tabs on, so perhaps Murray becomes the first domino to fall in that department.

Murray, 17, recently competed in the 2022 MLS Next All-Star Game back in July and was called up to the USMNT’s U19 camp later that month.

He spent 2021 and a portion of 2022 with the Earthquakes U17 team in MLS Next U17 and appeared on San Jose Earthquakes II of MLS Next Pro in 2022. In his two years, Murray had 14 appearances, 1,121 total minutes, and scored once.
