Oakland Roots announced they parted ways with head coach Noah Delgado and named Gavin Glinton interim head coach going forward.
It looked like a change was inevitable for Oakland Roots with the squad off to a 2-1-5 start to the season. The clock was already ticking prior to Oakland’s bad 2-nil loss to Colorado Springs on Saturday night, handing them its first win of the season. This tweet sure aged well.
The shortcomings of Roots so far this season has been noticeable. They’ve carried a streak without a clean sheet for 20 matches in USL Championship games, dating all the way back to a August 4 of last year. Despite having a boisterous home crowd, Delgado’s cast has mustered just two wins at home in the last 17 matches.
At the end of last season, I wrote about what it would mean for Delgado to return. With a disastrous start, which included four games without a goal, Delgado’s seat became hotter with each passing day. He spoke about having Oakland be defensively solid before the offense came together, but the streak without a clean sheet showed his plans were not coming together.
Delgado, 44, was a member of Oakland’s staff under Jordan Ferrell in 2021 and is the only holdover from the 2022 staff. He was a member of the El Salvador National Team’s staff as an assistant under manager Hugo Perez.
Roots named Delgado interim head coach in August of 2022 when Juan Guerra was put on administrative leave before his departure for Phoenix. He helped catapult Oakland to the postseason after taking over with just nine games remaining, going 5-1-3 over that span, including a big 3-0 upset of San Diego in the opening round.
He finishes his time in Oakland with the most games in charge and most wins for a manager in the organization’s brief history. For his coaching career with Roots, Delgado has established a record of 19-11-23.
