Oakland Roots vs. Monterey Bay F.C. – Match Preview (June 28, 2025)

Roots fans it is game day! Roots host Monterey Bay F.C. at 7:00 p.m. at the iconic Oakland Coliseum tonight, June 28, 2025.

Old favorite for games against our friends in the Central Coast:

The Jagermeister Cup is back to taunt the Roots with games that are now glorified friendlies.

It’s worth noting that the Roots are on one point after the two easy games in this group. Lmao. I don’t think the Roots can be eliminated with a win, although things will be far from in their control. I think they are gauranteed eliminated with anything other than a win.

You all know about Monterey Bay F.C. at this point. They’re pretty good but in a bit of a lull. We talked about it on RootsPod this week.

I hope to see you all at the game!

Match Predictions

Bloom

Everyone has fun. Roots win and spoil Monterey’s cup run? This prediction is in tension with the fact that I think Feilhaber will not do everything to win this game–I think he will prioritize tinkering to learn more about his squad in a game where the only upside is playing well for the home fans. That’s not nothing, but ultimately this game affects very little for Roots’ season.

Jon

Well, hey, I’ll throw down for a pointless Cup game. I’m curious to see the lineup given the team needs to continue building fluidity in Benny Feilhaber’s system, while also providing an opportunity to test things out. I think my only change from the previous lineup would be Bobosi Byaruhanga in for Ali Elmasnaouy, assuming Bobosi is available. I like Jurgen Damm and Morey Doner playing the wingback roles, so I think you keep that going for another match.

Roots break through and send the fanbase into a trenzy. 4-nil
